Bovine viral diarrhea is a common viral disease affecting cattle. It is caused by the bovine viral diarrhea virus. Due to the diversity in the genetic and antigenetic properties of the virus, the clinical manifestation of BVD is highly different and four types may be distinguished, i.e. transient acute infection, rare severe acute infection, persistent infection, chronic infection and mucosal disease.
Bovine viral diarrhea has negative impact on both reproduction and production, and it is considered one of the most relevant cattle viral disease. BVD can reduce productivity of cattle herds in many ways, e.g. milk production, reproductive performance, growth or general resistance against diseases, it normally has a huge economic impact. To protect your farm from infection elimination of PIs, biosecurity and vaccination are recommended.
A series of investigations have been performed to assess indicators of BVD status and to track disease prevalence, financial impact and vaccine usage.
Prevalence of BVD Type 1, predominant genotype globally.
Prevalence of virus positive (PI) animals in countries without systematic BVD control, based on serological samples from targeted age groups (spot samples) or antibody levels in bulk milk.
Annual average costs per cow in the outbreak herd, in presumed normal endemic conditions (moderate to high BVD prevalence).
Prevalence of antibody-positive animals in countries without systematic BVD control, based on serological samples from targeted age groups (spot samples) or antibody levels in bulk milk.
Vaccination coverage in countries where BVD vaccines are available.
